Lance - Manuscript Evaluation
Among
the things I do are editing and evaluation of other peoples’
manuscripts.
When I
evaluate a manuscript, I read it with a critical eye and give
the writer my honest judgment about the work’s marketability.
I may also offer suggestions for changes.
When I
edit a manuscript, I make some changes myself—usually wording,
syntax, minor reorganization—and also offer suggestions for
things the writer can do to improve the text.
Among
the many manuscripts I have edited are the following two recently
published books:
DECEIVED:
THE STORY OF THE DONNER PARTY by Peter R. Limburg (Ips books,
1998). This fascinating book tells the incredible
and often moving tale of the ill-fated Donner expedition
to the promised land of California. Peter Limburg weaves
his extensive research seamlessly into the narrative. I
enjoyed working on this book, and recommend it to anyone
who is a history buff or just likes a good story.
After
reviewing my editing suggestions, Peter wrote,
"I
think you gave excellent value, and your fee was reasonable."

COMET
DIS’ASTER by L. Eduardo Vega (Regent, 2000). This
exciting and disturbing science fiction novel tells the
stories of a number of Americans who are unlucky enough
to be living during the time (in the very near future) when
a large comet strikes the earth, destroying civilization
and a big part of the ecosystem. Everything Dr. Vega writes
about is eerily plausible and based in real science. Although
it's been a couple of years since I worked on the book,
a number of its scenes remain vividly in my mind.
